It has been a while since news of the eagerly awaited new Museum of Antiquities, the Great Egyptian Museum (GEM), which will be the largest archaeological museum in the world, made the rounds. Egypt has begun a redesign of its museum, promising to preserve and enhance the historic site without losing its most famous collection.

The building will replace the world-famous Egyptian Museum, sometimes called the Museum of Cairo, built in 1901 in the city centre and currently housing Pharaonic antiquities, including the iconic golden death mask of Tutankhamun. The museum is a huge concrete hall that will eventually house over 50,000 artifacts, including a collection of artifacts from the famous Tutankhamun, popularly known as King Tut, as well as other treasures currently stored in the Egyptian National Museum and National Library in Cairo.

The new museum will be located in the heart of Giza, within walking distance of the pyramids and the sphinx and will provide access to the largest and most important archaeological site in the world. It will also serve as one of the centrepieces of the Great Egyptian Museum, with a new gallery to show what was ever possible at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.
